As a proud 2015 graduate of St. Patrick High School, Chicago’s oldest all-boys Catholic school, watching the Shamrocks punch their ticket to the state tournament for the first time under Coach Mike Bailey is nothing short of exhilarating. This victory over Mount Carmel in the Class 3A Illinois-Chicago Supersectional wasn’t just about basketball—it was about legacy, resilience, and the pride of being a Shamrock.

A Night to Remember

March 10, 2025, will be etched in St. Pat’s history as the night the Shamrocks took down a powerhouse and proved their mettle. In a thrilling 49-48 win at Credit Union 1 Arena, St. Patrick fought until the final buzzer, showing heart and determination. Seeing RJ McPartlin dominate with 12 points and 8 rebounds, along with Anthony Favia’s 10-point contribution, was a testament to the depth of this squad.

For those of us who wore the green and gold, this victory was personal. The echoes of years past, the close calls, the heartbreaks, and the unforgettable moments all culminated in this triumph. It’s a moment that every Shamrock—past, present, and future—can take pride in.

State Bound: The Journey Continues

With this win, St. Patrick advances to the state semifinals, set to face Brother Rice in Champaign. The anticipation is electric, and the Shamrock faithful are ready to rally behind this team as they chase a state title.

As a photographer and an alum, capturing this moment through my lens was surreal. Seeing the intensity in the players’ eyes, the roaring student section, and the raw emotion of victory reminded me why St. Pat’s isn’t just a school—it’s a brotherhood.

To the players: soak it all in. This is your moment. To the fans: keep the energy high. The journey isn’t over yet. And to every alum, including myself: we are St. Patrick. Always have been. Always will be.

These images serve as a visual narrative of a pivotal moment in modern history. The collection reflects the raw emotion, resilience, and turmoil that defined the summer of 2020.

The Story Behind the Lens

The photographs document not only peaceful protests but also the aftermath of the civil unrest, including moments of destruction and resilience in Chicago and Champaign, Illinois. These images are a window into the societal upheaval that led to lasting conversations about justice, accountability, and systemic change.

One striking photo features rows of boarded-up storefronts, including the Champaign, Illinois Police Department—a poignant reminder of the fears and precautions businesses and institutions took during the peak of the protests. Another photo captures the defacement of the National Guard Reserve base in Champaign, reflecting the depth of public anger and frustration.

In downtown Chicago, bridges were raised and roadways barricaded to restrict access and prevent further demonstrations from spilling into vulnerable areas. Photographs of burned-out and defaced police vehicles, captured from the City of Chicago's impound lot, are haunting symbols of the unrest. Additionally, I captured protestors gathered outside Trump Tower.

A Chronicle of Locations and Dates

This collection spans several key moments between May 2020 and October 2020, with images from:

• Chicago, Illinois: Downtown protests, Trump Tower demonstrations, and northwest-side marches where demonstrators obstructed traffic.

• Champaign, Illinois: Scenes from the streets, including boarded-up stores, police stations, and significant public buildings that became symbols of both destruction and resilience.

The Importance of Context and Responsibility

While some images depict peaceful demonstrations, others reveal instances of destruction, such as shattered windows, defaced buildings, and looted stores. These visuals remind viewers of the complex realities surrounding the protests—highlighting not only the calls for justice but also the consequences of civil unrest.

This collection aims to foster reflection and dialogue. It’s essential to approach these images with an understanding of their historical and emotional context. My goal is to present the events as they unfolded, without bias, to preserve the truth of what transpired.

Nam (AP), David Banks (Getty), and myself are on the floor ready to shoot 30 minutes prior to tip off while all the players are still warming up, many other photographers are already set up at this point. Little did we know we were in for a rollercoaster of a game. Unfortunately with my assignment and scheduling that day, I needed to "in camera edit" and lock selected photos from the back of the camera screen to solely ingest and save time, and didn't have time allocated time to go through all the photos on my computer at half time and the end of the game. I went through all the photos several days after the game for second edits. (For more info on this, please use the contact tab and I am very open to sharing my workflow) At a certain point myself and other shooters just get in a specific mind set and go on focus mode and engage in the game. This point was unusually early for this game. Half way through the half first, I remember turning to my colleague Nam Huh (mentor and friend) and telling him"this is the greatest basketball game I've ever seen".
